Sweet Melody

My oldest explained to me yesterday that her name means "melody" and "strength".  If we had known Caroline's personality before we named her I would have chosen a name with these meanings.

I explained to Caroline that a melody can be added to any plain sentence to make it into a song and that is what she is...a melody.  You add Caroline to any plain situation and you create a melody.  She really liked this meaning.

Lately, we've been watching Caroline grow, mature and become a little lady in so many ways.  Our favorite times with Caroline are after everyone is in bed and we have our talks, just the three of us.  She comes up with such unique questions that give us insight into how her little brain works and how she processes the joys and hardships around her.

Last night she was struggling with watching two women she loves struggle with cancer.  Her kindergarten teacher and her AWANAS teacher are both in a struggle for their lives.  She tried to articulate her feelings and ended up just crying her emotions and fears into my shoulder.  I wanted to take away the pain and confusion but instead saw my child processing in a way she is comfortable with and then come up with different ideas to cheer up and encourage these two women.  Her personality to a 'T'.

I'm also realizing how important my role is with Caroline.  There are many times that our similar personalities create a 'perfect storm' in our interaction but, yet, those similar personalities also create such a sweet melody in many situations.  I am reminded of my relationship with my own mother.  Personalities similar in many ways and different in many ways but joined together we have created a wonderful melody of friendship in our adult lives.  I strive for this with my own children.

I am looking forward to a summer with Caroline around each day, watching her grow and mature and, selfishly, having her help with the kids.  If we can bypass the bossy and embrace the helpfulness Mommy will be very happy! :)

Oh the joy of watching your children grow and mature and also the ache it brings to your heart as you watch time slipping by....
