Patch of Flowers...what's in a name
Years ago I was sitting at my desk in our basement in our first home trying to figure out a unique email address. For goodness sake - my new last name was FLOWERS - I had to come up with something creative having been bestowed with such a fun and wonderful last name.
Somehow I came up with patchofflowers knowing that someday my husband and I would have a little patch of flowers and we would watch our family grow and bloom through the years.
Thus, we were patchofflowers@....com
Then, the year Jason started teaching and his landscaping business was created it was only natural that we would name it Patch of Flowers Landscaping, LLC...
Jason's business was such a success. His integrity and hard work created a company that his clients believed in, trusted and began to succeed solely based on high recommendations from these clients. At first Jason did all the manual labor and as our account list grew we added another work truck, trailer, full time employee and eventually a bookkeeper since I am not known for my mathematical skills. :)
Even though we saw success and watched the business grow, it took a great deal out of Jason as he was also teaching, coaching and obtaining his Master's...thus family time was REALLY hard to come by. So, after 5 years, we sold the business, accounts and equipment, to another landscaping company. This was about 2 years ago and we knew it was the right decision when just a few months later the drought really took a toll on the landscaping community and many others lost their businesses without being able to make any profit at all.
Now, as the economy has affected my hours as a part time Executive Assistant for a company in Atlanta, we are seeing the need to get out and mow a few lawns again. Our desire is not to build a business again, but rather have a few maintenance accounts, a few pine straw and flower installs to help see us through these times. Plus, Jason loves to get outside, work hard and get a little dirty.
Last summer he held about 6 accounts and did it all from his truck bed, which was difficult, so this summer we knew that a trailer and large mower were needed to maintain about 10 accounts. Sooo, this past weekend he found an excellent deal through craigs list and purchased a mower and trailer. He had fun fixing up the trailer, painting it and adding his equipment. He went out Monday and Tuesday for his first round of lawns and enjoyed getting back into the swing of things.
This year he won't be coaching and even though he'll be working on his Specialists degree, it will not be as time consuming, so we are praying to find balance and protect family time as much as possible.
Our goal is not to grow a big business again, but rather give ourselves the needed monetary supplement and Jason's truck and new trailer are just the way to do that! Being proactive and working hard helps Jason feel as if he is making a difference in these hard times and I love seeing him go out and succeed!
Thus, the Patch of Flowers Landscaping truck will again be seen....driven by my cute and hardworking husband!
