Doster's Birthday

Wednesday we celebrated Doster's birthday with, his favorite, pizza in the dining room which he dubbed the "Party Room". He was so excited to open his cards and his one present from us. We are saving his other present for his family party on Saturday. He loved his sword we gave him and thought it was the neatest thing.

I know, two "violent" gifts this week...and it was something we talked about and thought through. We looked the topic up on Focus on the Family's forum and found this quote from Dr. Dobson during a radio show...

"I tell you what, you do have some things to worry about at that age group, but going 'bang, bang' with a gun is not one of them. I think we've just made so big a deal out of that. The violence that's occurring on the school campuses today does not come out of that. It comes out of anger. It comes out of frustration. It comes out of rejection. It comes out of bullying. It comes out of all kinds of things, but it does not come out of giving a three- or four- or five- or six- or seven-year-old a toy gun. I think that's ridiculous. If you don't give your boy a gun, he will eat a peanut butter sandwich into the shape of a gun or a cucumber or a carrot or something, because they're fascinated with them. And there's no emotion to it. They're not killing. This is just the way they are made. Their interest in guns is like their interest in trucks and balls and competition and those other things. And I would not spend a lot of time worrying about that. Get the kid a toy gun."

...and we felt that it was exactly in line with how we feel. So, we're starting this next phase with Doster being aware and giving him some boundaries in his play but yet letting him be a rough and tough little guy at the same time.

Jason and I working on Doster's present for Saturday. Sarah, my friend, gave me a train table that her neighbor had given her. It has so many different pieces of train track, trains, mountains, trees, and animals. It is a little boy's dream! We painted the table and then set up the track so that it would be ready for the unveiling on Saturday. He's gonna love it!
